Thinking it would be a step up from the older version I was using, I happily accepted and the program downloaded and installed the updated version. Unfortunately, the next time I fired up Thunderbird, I was greeted with constant freezes of my screen. As soon as I clicked on the “Get Mail” button, after just a few seconds, the screen would freeze up. Knowing that I had important emails waiting to be responded to, I started to panic a little. I downloaded and re-installed the latest version again. Same problem. I then installed the program to a different folder, same problem. I then downloaded a beta version, same problem. Ugh. It dawned on me that the only way to fix this would be to go back to the version I was using before, the one that worked fine. That was 2.x. But how to find that over a year old version? I then remembered that there were sites dedicated to just such a thing. I recall years ago when Winamp released a brand new, but bloated and buggy, version of their software. Users revolted and most people went back to the previous version. That’s when I discovered sites like:

Thankfully, I was able to download version 2.0 and install it again, now my email is humming along nicely. Note that I did download a couple versions before it was working again, so you may need to try a few as well. Hope that helps someone who is struggling with Thunderbird, and other buggy new versions of popular programs!

Basically, this is like those popular click-to-donate sites like Care2 and TheAnimalRescueSite. You just answer a trivia question and they donate 10 pieces of kibble to animal shelters. Nice site and a worthy cause! Well worth your time.

I’ll be doing more posts showcasing these click-to-donate sites, and perhaps a post with a master list of them. It just takes a few seconds each day to really make a difference, a wonderful thing, not to mention completely free.
